1. What are ovarian cysts?

  • Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled cysts arising within the ovary.
2. What causes most ovarian cysts?
  • Most cysts are caused as a result of hormonal imbalance or the thyroid problem.
3. What are the symptoms of ovarian cysts?
  • Most common symptoms are pain which can occur during or in between periods, irregular periods and abdominal distention.
4. Can a cyst cause pain?
  • Of course, the first symptom of cysts is a pain. It gives pain if the size is big or it gets twisted.
5. Can a cyst cause you to gain weight?
  • Not usually but polycystic ovaries can cause weight gain. PCOS can cause metabolic issues resulting in weight gain.
6. How a cyst interfere with the menstrual cycle?
  • Only PCOD cyst causes delayed periods. Most of the physiological cysts can also cause an irregular menstrual cycle at times.
7. Can a cyst cause infertility?
  • Yes, PCOD endometriosis causes infertility.
8. How are ovarian cysts diagnosed? Which type of tests are needed for the same?
  • Most commonly by pelvic examination and ultrasound other than MRI. It is advisable to go for the diagnosis on the second or third day of menstruation.

9. What are the different types of ovarian cysts?

  • Mainly 2 types – i.Physiological ii.Pathological
A. Benign -1.Dermoid 2. Mucous 3. Serous 4. Endometrioma
B.Malignant – Solid Tumors.
10. What type of cysts are cancerous?
  • 1. Mucous cystadenocarcinoma 2. Serous cystadenocarcinoma
11. When is surgery needed?
  • When cysts persist more than 5 cm or when cysts keep on growing inside or become solid in nature.
12. Which type of surgery is used to treat ovarian cyst?
  • Cysts can be removed by laparoscopy or laparotomy.
13. After menopause also, can ovarian cysts be formed?
  • Yes, they can form, but they have few chances of developing cancer.
14. Are multiple cysts on an ovary a sign of cancer?
  • No, not most of the times.

  • Take good care of your health and girl child. Get an ultrasound done immediately if pain or abdominal enlargement appears and if there is too much weight gain or too much weight loss.
