A career in design is one such stream that has gained significant traction in recent times. While in literal terms, Design stands for everything creative which also reflects the ability to think of a new way of approaching a real-life problem.

Indian Design Industry

It will be interesting to note that the Indian Design Industry is growing exponentially and is set to become Rs. 18,800 crores industry by the year 2020. With design-based engineering being at the core of most new-age businesses, a career in design seems to be a great viable option, especially for students with a creative bent of mind.

There are ample job openings available in the private and public sector for trained design graduates and postgraduates. On completion of your design education, you can seek employment in government organizations and institutions by qualifying competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, PSC, etc.

To pursue this course at a reputable design institute, you need to clear your Higher Secondary level examination and an aptitude test conducted by various Design Institutes.

A degree in design can be quite challenging as it takes 3 to 5 years to accomplish this course. Nevertheless, it is a rewarding career option as your three to five years of toil equips you with the perfect amalgamation of both theoretical and practical design skills.

  1. Fashion Design

One of the most sought-after career choices, fashion design has a huge scope in India. If you want to gain hands-on experience in leather design, knitwear design, accessory design, fabric research and development, apparel production, or fashion communication, then fashion design is the apt career choice for you.

It can offer you a plethora of job opportunities in terms of a career in export houses, fashion media, textile mills, boutiques, garment manufacturing units, or fashion event management.

2. Interior Design

If you have a knack for doing up your workspace or home then, this is the apt career choice for you. Interior designing encompasses space designing, innovation, aesthetics, and optimum resource utilization.

Interior design, as a career option is booming in India as the demand for interior decorators is on the rise in real estate companies, airports, cafes, hotels, movie theaters, shopping malls, and exhibitions.

3. Product Design

Also known as industrial design, this stream of design focuses on designing consumers durable such as automobiles, television, games, toys, mobile phones, storage units, civil construction, helmets, furniture, civil construction, medical instruments, and much more.

As this design discipline entails intricate product design, it encourages cross-functional team collaboration to shape the products.

4. Communication Design

If you want to pursue multimedia arts, animation, or graphic design as your career, communication design is the best option for you. This design stream teaches you the art of conveying a compelling brand message by putting the design principles into practice.  

There is a huge demand for communication designers in the arena of instructional design, animation, creative direction, fashion communication, graphic design, content strategy, advertising, UX/ UI design, brand management, marketing communication, and lots more.

The job of a communication designer involves designing digital images, diagrams, maps, brochures, product packaging, posters, album, covers, book covers, etc.

What to choose after 10th for Career in Design?

The design disciplines mentioned above entail the amalgamation of applied arts and applied sciences for improving the aesthetics and functionality of products.

It is advisable that you pick applicable subjects in the 11th grade. If you want to go in for B.Tech in Fashion Technology, it is essential to take up Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in your 11th and 12th grade.

On the other hand, if you want to pursue a B.Design Program, you can choose any subject combinations.

A Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Design helps you explore myriad job opportunities in diverse sectors. From fashion, jewelry, food, furniture, and software to automobiles, construction, electronics, and film, every industry is embracing the talent of skilled designers to add value to their products or services.

Undergraduate Design Opportunities

If you have a flair for Designing and want to make it your career, you should opt for an undergraduate design course offered by specialized design institutes in India. The certified design institutions in India offer 4-year Bachelor programs—B. Design and B.F.Tech to design aspirants.

If you want to pursue a course in Communication Design, you can also opt for a Bachelor Program in Visual Arts (BVA).

Some design institutes also offer 1-year Diploma courses in fashion design, graphic design, web design after your 12th -grade qualification.

Postgraduate Design Programs

After completing an undergraduate design program, you may opt for 2-year Postgraduate programs–M. Design (Master of Design) or MVA (Master of Visual Arts).

A postgraduate degree in games design, industrial design, transport design, fashion design, retail design, design management, fashion art, etc., can take you places by enabling you to discover diverse and wide-ranging career routes.
